I said I'd let you know what was in the boxes. Well, today's the day. And the answer is owls.
Owl salt and pepper sets to be precise. They were made in 1966 by Hornsea Pottery and are designed by John Clappison. I think the graphics on the owl illustrations are superb, I also like the simplified owl shape of the pots. The cruets were made in three colour schemes – there's also a brown-bodied version. As well as these owl cruets, there are also similar ones in the form of birds, fish and cats.
Lovely examples of 1960s retro style, made even better by being in original boxes.
What stylish owls and smart boxes. They look in amazing condition too. You have some great looking Hornsea pots, the more you post the more I want some myself. Thanks for sharing them.

ReplyDeleteHello there, I see you are a fan of Hornsea like myself so I've just enjoyed looking at your other Hornsea posts. Wow these are lovely samples of the cruets and how wonderful to get them with the packaging too. My dream is to find the cat cruets. I have a set of the fish but one is a bit chipped.

Only yesterday I saw quite a full set of Bronte in a charity shop (not a design I'm collecting) for what looked to be 50p an item, I thought it was a shame the set will not be kept together.
I will enjoy looking at your blog further when I get chance as I love ceramics too.
